The most expensive words in component sourcing are “we can handle that.” I’ve said them. I’ve heard them. I’ve paid for them.
I’m not talking about the price of the part. I’m talking about the cost of trusting a supplier who won’t admit where their expertise ends. Eleven years ago, I started as a sourcing coordinator for metal components. Today I handle quoting for automotive stampings, dies, CNC machined parts, forgings, and aluminum extrusions at Champion. I’ve personally made and documented 14 significant mistakes—roughly $23,000 in wasted budget—and I maintain the pre-quote checklist that stops our team from repeating them. The lesson underneath every mistake is the same: expertise has boundaries, and the people who know theirs are the ones worth working with.
The $3,200 Spark Plug Box
In March 2022, a customer called asking for a Champion Copper Plus small engine spark plug. He had searched for “Champion auto parts” and assumed that meant we handle the whole Champion product line. We don’t make spark plugs. We make stampings, progressive dies, CNC machined parts, forgings, and aluminum extrusions. Instead of saying that ignition parts aren’t our lane, I said the five words that have cost me the most: “we can handle that.”
The distributor had a good price and a fast ship date. That should have been my first red flag. I was buying on availability instead of application fit. The order came through as 1,200 Champion Copper Plus small engine spark plugs. I remember opening the boxes and feeling proud. Then the customer called: wrong heat range. The plugs weren’t right for the engines in his kits.
If I remember correctly, the buy was about $3,200. Every one of those plugs went into the trash. The distributor wasn’t trying to mislead me. I never asked what engine the plugs would be used in, and they didn’t ask either. A catalog can list a part number, but it can’t tell you whether the part is right for the application. That takes someone with experience.
People search for “Champion auto parts” and imagine a company with a giant catalog. But a giant catalog isn’t expertise. It’s just inventory. The difference between a parts vendor and a component partner is that the partner verifies the application before they take the order.
The Part Name Is Not the Specification
A year later, I almost made the same mistake as a buyer. I wanted to help a friend source a Mazdaspeed 3 intercooler for his project car. The name sounded complete. How many versions of a Mazdaspeed 3 intercooler can there be? Actually, there are two generations, and the mounting points are different.
I caught it this time—or rather, the specialist I called caught it. They asked which generation the car was before quoting. I almost said “just give me the price.” If they had, we would have ordered the wrong part.
Then there was the Centerforce 384193 clutch disc. A part number looks like the ultimate specification. But a part number is only useful if the person reading it knows that a clutch disc must match spline count, disc diameter, hub height, and input shaft geometry. A specialist checks those variables. A generalist types the number into a search box and hopes.
People think custom parts are where errors happen. Actually, the risk is in familiar parts with official-looking names. The more normal a request looks, the more likely everyone stops asking questions. The same is true in metal forming: “progressive die” doesn’t tell you the material thickness, the tonnage, the coating, or the maintenance plan. The part name isn’t the specification. What I mean is, a PO line item is a request, not a design review. The supplier who asks questions is doing the review you didn’t know you needed.
What Differential Tuition Taught Me
In 2023, I opened my daughter’s tuition statement and found a line item I’d never seen: differential tuition. I had no idea what it meant. So I did what everyone does: I searched “what is differential tuition?”
Turns out it’s a pricing model for certain majors, usually engineering or business. The university knew exactly when to add it and how it worked. I didn’t need to become an expert in university pricing. I needed to call the right department and pay the bill.
That moment didn’t make me dumb. It made me efficient. I’m a metal forming guy, not a university pricing guy. If I called the admissions office and demanded they quote a progressive die, I’d expect a polite “no.” The same logic applies to sourcing. If I call a stamping specialist and ask them to quote a fuel pump, I shouldn’t expect them to become a fuel pump expert overnight.
The suppliers who’ve earned my trust over the years are the ones who have said, “this isn’t our strength—here’s who does it better.” I remember every one of those moments. I don’t remember a single “no problem” that saved me from a headache. I’d rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises.
Saying “No” Is a Quoting Skill
You might be thinking: doesn’t a one-stop supplier reduce supply chain risk? It sounds good in a pitch deck. But a one-stop shop only reduces risk if every department inside it has real expertise. If they’re all passing the job to a sub-tier partner or guessing, you haven’t consolidated risk. You’ve consolidated blind spots under one roof.
Per FTC advertising guidance (ftc.gov/business-guidance/advertising-marketing), a claim has to be truthful and substantiated. When a supplier tells you “we can handle that,” ask for the substantiation. A process control plan. A gage R&R. A customer reference from an OEM audit. If it’s not on paper, it’s a hope, not a capability.

But we still draw a line at products that need a completely different supply chain, like spark plugs or intercoolers. That line isn’t a weakness. It’s what makes the rest of our promises countable.
It sounds kinda backwards for a supplier to say “we don’t do that.” But it’s the most respectful thing you can say to a buyer’s budget. It took me six years and 14 mistakes to understand that saying “no” is not a lost order. It’s a filter. It tells the buyer, “this person cares more about accuracy than their hit rate.”
So if a supplier says they can make your component, great. Then ask them what they can’t do. The answer will tell you more than their capability statement ever will.
