Champion Copper Plus Spark Plug RJ19LM, Bobcat Fuel Filter Replacement, and Throttle Body Cleaner: Four Scenarios

I'm a quality/compliance manager at Champion, and I review a lot of parts before they ship. Over time, a small amount of blow-by oil and combustion gas can bake onto the throttle bore. That film can make the throttle plate stick slightly or disturb the idle air flow. When the engine idle becomes rough or stalls occasionally at stop signs, and you can see a dark ring of carbon around the throttle plate, a throttle body cleaner is often the right tool.

Here's how to use it like a quality person: remove the intake duct if you can, spray the cleaner onto a clean rag, and wipe the throttle bore and plate. You can use the spray directly on stubborn carbon, but avoid soaking sensors and electrical connectors. Most throttle body cleaners are not meant for mass air flow sensors. If the product label says it's safe for the throttle body and does not harm sensors, follow the label. If the service manual says the throttle body has an anti-friction coating, do not scrub it with a wire brush.

When is throttle body cleaner not the answer?

If your engine has a vacuum leak, a bad idle air control valve, a faulty throttle position sensor, or a failing mass air flow sensor, cleaning the throttle body will not help. The cleaner only works when carbon is the cause. That's why I always say: don't spray first and inspect later. Inspect first. Look at the throttle body. If it's clean and the engine idles badly, you're on the wrong branch.

Scenario 4: A Makita water pump is a different branch entirely

Sometimes the pump runs fine but moves no water because the foot valve is stuck. Sometimes the issue is simply a suction hose that is old and soft.

We checked the discharge side, we checked the impeller, we checked everything around the pump. Then someone found a hairline crack in the suction hose.
