Champion J19LM Spark Plug Cross-Reference FAQ: What to Check Before You Install

Champion J19LM Spark Plug: What Does It Fit?

The Champion J19LM spark plug is one of those plugs that shows up in a lot of small engines. You'll find it in Briggs & Stratton mowers, Tecumseh engines, generators, pumps, and small construction equipment. It has a 14mm thread, a 3/4-inch reach, and a 13/16-inch hex. The gap in most applications is 0.030 inch—or rather, that's what I set it to unless the engine sticker says otherwise.

Champion's part code is actually useful if you know how to read it. The J means 14mm thread. The 19 is the heat range. L means long reach. M is the electrode design. Add an R to the front—RJ19LM—and it's the resistor version. If an engine calls for the R, don't substitute the non-resistor plug just because it fits. You'll get the same spark, but you'll also get radio interference and potentially noise that messes with engine electronics.

Spark Plug Cross Reference: Champion J19LM to NGK and Autolite

So what's the spark plug cross reference Champion chart going to say for a J19LM? In most catalogs, the non-resistor J19LM crosses to NGK BPM4A and Autolite 46. If the original plug is the resistor RJ19LM, the usual NGK cross is BPMR4A.

Keep in mind: a cross-reference chart is not a dimensional drawing. It's more like a Pantone Color Bridge guide: it gives you a CMYK equivalent for a spot color, but the actual printed result depends on the paper, the press, and the calibration. Same with a spark plug: the catalog number can look right, but the gap, reach, and heat range still need to be verified in the real engine. I've seen a box labeled 0.030 gap and a plug inside that measured 0.035. Check the gap before installation.

GFP Spark Plug F5RTC: Is It a Direct Replacement?

What about the GFP spark plug F5RTC? GFP isn't a brand I have a lot of history with, so I'll be honest about that. The F5RTC code is a standard Chinese-market designation for a 14mm resistor plug. In the cross-reference lists I keep, F5RTC maps to NGK BPR5ES, and the most common Champion equivalent is RN11YC.

Here's the problem. I ordered a small batch of F5RTC plugs once for a comparison test. I should add that the test engine was our own test stand, not a customer unit. I went back and forth between using those plugs and a known brand for about a week. On paper, the F5RTC had the right dimensions and heat range. My gut said the QC process was inconsistent.   • Flange surface flatness—warped flanges don't seal, no matter how tight you torque them.
