Why a Quality Manager Won’t Name One “Best” Champion Part

I’m Not Going to Tell You the “Best” Part

Let me stop you before you ask for the “best” spark plug. I won’t name one. If you ask me for the best Champion part, I’ll ask what it’s going into. That isn’t a sales dodge. It’s how quality work actually happens.

I’m the quality/compliance manager at Champion, and I review every part number before it ships—roughly 200 line items per year. In our Q1 2024 quality audit, we rejected 11% of first-article submissions from outside suppliers because the “equivalent” part didn’t match the drawing. The parts weren’t necessarily defective. They were simply not the part that was specified. For a quality inspector, that distinction matters.

My experience is based on around 200 mid-volume automotive orders, mostly for OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers. That’s a narrow slice. If you’re in heavy truck or aerospace, your traceability requirements are different. I can’t speak to those.

Part Numbers Are Specifications, Not Marketing

Never expected the more expensive spark plug to be the wrong choice. But in certain small engines, it absolutely was.

A Residential Water Booster Pump Is a Pump Curve, Not a Popularity Contest

Same thing applies outside ignition parts. I had to pick a residential water booster pump for my own house this year, and I went back and forth between two pumps for two weeks. On paper, the bigger pump had more horsepower and more impressive specs. My gut said it would short-cycle against my pressure tank. I chose the smaller one with a gentler curve. A MERV 8 filter captures more than 70% of particles in the 3.0 to 10.0 micron range, plus a smaller share of fine particles. It’s the standard residential filter for many HVAC systems.

Does that make MERV 8 the “best” filter? No. A MERV 13 filter catches way more particles, but it also creates more pressure drop. Put a high-pressure-drop filter in a slot designed for a 1-inch MERV 8 and the blower has to work harder. Airflow drops. The furnace may overheat. The rating is a lab measurement, not a guarantee of comfort. The right filter depends on your system’s airflow, family allergies, and ductwork. That’s why I won’t tell you “always buy MERV 13.” I’ll tell you to check the pressure drop and the filter slot depth.

But Don’t You Have to Recommend Something?

There’s a fair objection here: if every part depends on the application, how does anyone decide? Fair question. Here’s what I actually recommend:

For a residential water booster pump, list your fixture count, desired pressure, and pipe size. Then check the pump curve. For an audi q5 headlight bulb, verify the model year, trim, and connector type before ordering. For a MERV 8 filter, match the rating to the furnace’s airflow needs; if you choose MERV 13, make sure the system can handle the pressure drop.

The bottom line isn’t that all parts are equal. The bottom line is that “best” without an application is a guess. As quality manager, I’d rather tell you “this isn’t the right fit for your situation” than let you install something that looks right on paper. That kind of honesty is a no-brainer for us.

Verify Current Specs

This was accurate as of our Q4 2024 catalog review. Part numbers can be superseded, and manufacturers update ignition and filtering recommendations regularly. Verify the current Champion application guide, check your vehicle owner’s manual, and confirm the pressure drop spec on any filter before buying.

I’m not going to pretend I’ve seen every application. But I’ve seen enough wrong-part failures to know that the answer “it depends” is not a cop-out. It’s the profession.
