Most timing belts should be replaced between 60,000 and 100,000 miles. If you're asking me for a planning number, use 90,000 miles unless the owner's manual says something different. The answer to 'how long does a timing belt last' is not 'until it breaks.' It's a mileage interval, and the cheapest way to manage it is to replace the belt before it owes you an engine. That same logic follows me when I buy a Champion J19LM spark plug, a 120 amp alternator, or a 5202 fog light bulb: pay for certainty now, not for a repair later.
I'm a procurement manager at a 14-person fleet maintenance shop. I've managed our parts budget (about $120,000 a year) since 2018, negotiated with more than 40 vendors, and logged every order in our cost tracking system. How Long Does a Timing Belt Last? The Short Version

If you have no record that it was done and the vehicle is above 90,000, I'd treat it as overdue.
- Owner's manual: If it lists 105,000, use that. Do not stretch to 110,000 to save money.
- Age: Belts are rubber. Even at 60,000 miles, a 10-year-old belt is worth replacing.
- Condition: A belt that 'looks fine' can still fail. I've seen belts with missing teeth and belts that looked perfect until they snapped.
If you can't prove the timing belt was replaced, assume it wasn't.
The belt interval matters whether the engine is an interference design or not. With an interference engine, a snapped belt can bend valves and damage the head. A $700 timing belt job prevents a $2,500 repair. On a non-interference engine, a broken belt won't destroy the engine, but it still means a tow, a stranded driver, and a loss of trust from the person who asked you to fix it.

In Q3 2024, I quoted a timing belt service on a 2.4L sedan. One vendor bid $490, another bid $780. The cheaper quote did not include a new water pump or tensioner. The second quote did. Once I added the missing parts, the difference was $90. I went with the $780 quote because the timing belt job is the one place I do not want a 'lowest price' headline.
I went back and forth on an aftermarket vs. OEM kit for a customer's car. The aftermarket kit was $180 cheaper, but the OEM kit included the hydraulic tensioner. The aftermarket kit didn't. The part cost difference disappeared once I priced the tensioner separately. I chose OEM, not because of the badge, but because the TCO math was close and the certainty was higher.
Champion J19LM Spark Plug and the Champion Spark Plug Cleaner
The Champion J19LM spark plug is one of the most common small-engine plugs I stock. We use it in push mowers, generators, and pressure washers. At roughly $5 per plug, it's not a part I stress about. I replace it on the recommended interval or every two years, whichever comes first.
A Champion spark plug cleaner can be a useful tool in a shop. It will remove carbon from a lightly fouled plug and help you see whether the plug is okay for a quick test. But cleaning a J19LM is almost never better than replacing it. A new plug gives you a fresh insulator, correct gap, and known condition. The cleaner saves you time only when a parts store is closed and you need a spare motor running right now.
If you ask me, the cleaner belongs in a shop's diagnostic drawer, not in the regular maintenance workflow. When a plug is fouled, the cause matters more than the plug. Fix the fuel or oil upstream, then install a fresh J19LM.
120 Amp Alternator: Match the Load, Not the Hype
A 120 amp alternator is a normal replacement spec on many modern cars and light trucks. It is not an automatic upgrade. Plenty of vehicles don't need more than 120 amps unless you've added a big sound system, a winch, a plow, or high-powered lights. When customers ask me whether they should go bigger, I ask them to add up their electrical load first.
The mistake I see is buying a 200-amp alternator for a vehicle that demands 85. The extra capacity doesn't hurt, but it costs more and sometimes needs a different pulley, bracket, or wiring connector. A 120 amp alternator with the correct harness and a clean bench test result is more valuable than a bigger number on the box.
In 2023, we replaced a dead 120 amp alternator on a fleet van. The customer asked for a 160 amp 'upgrade' because the first one failed. I explained the failure was caused by a worn belt and a loose connection, not by lack of output. We installed the same 120 amp rating and it's still running. The cheapest fix was the correct fix.
5202 Fog Light Bulb: The Bulb Is Usually Not the Problem
The 5202 fog light bulb is a common size on a lot of late-model cars, and customers often want to swap in a brighter LED. I understand the appeal, but I check two things first: the lens and the housing seal. A foggy lens will scatter even the most expensive bulb. A cracked housing lets moisture in and kills bulbs in weeks.
If the lens is clear and the housing is sealed, a quality 5202 bulb is worth the extra few dollars. Cheap bulbs I've tested fail sooner, and some do not match the listed color temperature. In Q1 2025, I bought three brands of 5202 bulbs for a comparison. The budget bulb failed after two months. The mid-price bulb lasted, and the light pattern looked the same as the original. I don't need the most expensive option; I need one that doesn't come back to me.
Where I Spend and Where I Save
My general rule: spend on anything that can stop the vehicle or cause a secondary failure; save on anything that's cosmetic or unnecessary. Timing belts are in the first category. Alternators are too, because a failed one leaves you stranded. Spark plugs and fog bulbs are close behind. A J19LM costs a few dollars. A 5202 bulb costs less than a tow. The moment you compare the part to the cost of being wrong, the decision gets easier.
There's something satisfying about a vehicle that starts on the first try after a parts job goes right. That's the outcome I'm budgeting for.
