Champion Copper Plus Small Engine Spark Plugs, Alternator Fuses, and Headlight Aim: A Buyer’s Guide

There isn't a single correct answer for any of the three jobs I get asked about most: spark plugs, alternator charging faults, and headlight aim. It depends on what you're working on, how you use it, and how much downtime costs you. This isn't a one-size-fits-all guide. It's more like a decision tree.

The Short Version

For small engines, Champion Copper Plus spark plugs are usually the right baseline. For a charging system that won't charge, check the fuse for the alternator before you order anything big. And if you need to know how to adjust headlight angle, start with a level wall and a tape measure—then pay a shop only if the quick method isn't enough.

Scenario 1: Champion Copper Plus Small Engine Spark Plug

I manage parts buying for a regional delivery fleet. We run 60-plus vehicles, but we also have six small utility engines—two generators, three walk-behind mowers, and one pressure washer. Those small engines fail more often from neglect than from expensive parts. I've tracked every service invoice since 2019, and the pattern is clear: most ignition complaints are old plugs, bad fuel, or a loose wire. The plug itself is rarely the whole story.

Scenario 2: Fuse for Alternator vs. Remy 94113 New Alternator

From the outside, a vehicle that loses charge looks like a failed alternator. The reality is that many charging-system complaints come from a blown fuse for the alternator, a corroded connector, or a loose belt. Alternators do fail. But replacing one before checking the circuit is like paying for a new engine before you check the gas gauge.

First move: check the fuse for the alternator. On many vehicles, there's a large blade fuse or fusible link in the under-hood fuse box, sometimes labeled "ALT" or "GEN." Pull it, inspect it, test it. Cost: $10 to $25 for a fuse as of March 2025; verify current pricing. Time: ten minutes. If it's blown, replace it and retest before buying anything bigger.

Why does this matter? Because a $300 alternator plus labor is a painful way to learn the real problem was a $12 fuse. (Not that I've done that. It's in the shop log.)

If the fuse blows again, stop. That's a short somewhere in the charging circuit. Swapping in an alternator will not fix the short. Trace the circuit or take it to an electrical specialist.

If you've confirmed the alternator is actually dead, then replacement is the next step. One option I see in supplier quotes is the Remy 94113 new alternator. It's a common replacement for specific applications, but "common" only helps if the OEM part number matches your vehicle. Cross-reference before you order. I learned that the hard way.

When I approved a Remy 94113 new alternator for one of our vans in Q4 2024, the unit came to $287 and the labor to $180. Verify current pricing because supply chains move. The rebuilt option was cheaper, but the warranty was shorter and the failure history made me nervous. Did I second-guess the decision? Yes. Even after approving the order, I kept asking, "What if the fuse was the whole issue?" We had bench-tested the old alternator, and it was actually dead. The worry didn't disappear until the van charged properly for a week.

The vendor who said, "This isn't our strength—here's who does it better," earned my trust for everything else.

That's where the boundary matters. I'd rather buy an alternator from a shop that specializes in electrical systems than from a generalist who claims they can handle everything. And if a supplier tells you honestly what they don't do, that's a sign they're being straight with you about what they do.

Scenario 3: How to Adjust Headlight Angle

This is the one people either overthink or skip. There are two realistic scenarios: you need a quick visual aim, or you need something that will pass inspection and not blind oncoming traffic.

What you need: level ground, a wall, a tape measure, and the adjustment screws on the headlight. Many vehicles have them on top or behind the housing. Some need a screwdriver; some need a socket.

  1. Park on level ground, about 25 feet from the wall, facing it.
  2. Measure from the ground to the center of each headlight lens. Mark those heights on the wall with tape.
  3. Turn the low beams on. The brightest part of the beam should sit at or slightly below the tape mark.
  4. Use the adjuster to move the beam up, down, left, or right. Then test-drive it and confirm the beam is straight ahead.

That's the practical answer to how to adjust headlight angle if you just changed a bulb, replaced a housing, or noticed the beam pointing at a mailbox. If the beam is still off after a first pass, re-measure. Eyeballing rarely works well.

When should you stop DIY? If the beam won't move, the housing is cracked, or the vehicle has auto-leveling sensors and a warning light is on. No manual adjuster will fix a broken self-leveling system. Also, every vehicle and jurisdiction has its own aim spec. The 25-foot method is the common starting point; verify with your service manual and local rules.

If you're up against an inspection deadline, a shop with an optical aim tool is usually faster. We paid $45 for a four-headlight aim in 2024. That's cheaper than failing an inspection because a beam was two inches low.

How to Decide Which Scenario You're In

Here's the shortcut I use when I'm looking at a repair order:

  • Small engine starts and runs rough? Check the Champion Copper Plus small engine spark plug first. Replace it if it's old, and don't automatically upgrade to a premium plug unless downtime is expensive.

The right answer depends on more than the part. Is the problem intermittent? Start with the cheap connection. How expensive is downtime? If one hour of downtime costs more than a premium plug, buy the premium. Are you doing planned maintenance? Use the baseline Champion Copper Plus plug and move on.

That's the process. It isn't exciting, but neither is a budget that gets blown by skipping a $12 fuse. The right repair order is a procurement decision, whether you're buying for one car or a whole fleet.
